Solid Wall Insulation

Houses built before 1930 and some in later years typically have solid masonry walls. Solid walls have no cavity or gap and this allows more heat to pass through them than through cavity walls. In fact, twice as much heat can be lost through an un-insulated solid wall as through an un-insulated cavity wall. – the Goverment now estimate that is round 35% of energy used to heat Britains' homes are lost through solid property walls.

Period solid wall properties represent over 25% of the UKs total housing stock and the Government are now keen to get these properties insulated and save carbon emissions. Solid walls can be insulated in two different ways: with internal insulation (from the inside) or external insulation (from the outside). Both options can make your home warmer and more comfortable, and greatly reduce your heating bills at the same time.

External Insulation

Installing external insulation is an area which has massive potential for the future as this is an area where very little work has been done to date. For the price of replacing existing render it now could be equally cost effective to install external wall insulation. However, more and more individuals are now starting to recognise the advantages of insulating such households and this is an area which is now seeing a real growth with many effective cost-effective solutions now available.

The system involves the mechanical and/or adhesive fixing of insulation boards to the outside of a building, which is then covered with a mesh reinforcement, a base coat and a final decorative finish. This layered method encases the property and helps prevent heat from escaping unnecessarily from the property. A variety of different thicknesses and insulation types are available depending on the aesthetic appearance of the property desired OR the level of insulation looking to be achieved.

“ There are now grants available to homeowners for external insulation under the Goverment Cert Scheme – typical example is approximately £800.00 for an average semi detached property"
